Travelling abroad is an exciting time that includes lots of preparation and many things to think about. Make sure one of the things you are thinking about is your health. Before heading out of the country you should visit a travel clinic to ensure your travels are safe and healthy.
The Mapleton Health Centre is now offering limited* travel consultation services to ensure you remain healthy and safe while travelling abroad.
Travel Consultations and travel-related vaccines are not covered by OHIP. However, many private insurance plans will cover the cost of travel immunizations.
Travel Consultation services are only available to Mapleton Health Centre patients at this time.
We recommend booking an appointment at least 8 weeks before travel as some vaccines require multiple doses.
To book an appointment for travel consultation you may call into the office and speak with a receptionist or click on the link below to send a request.
When you are travelling you may be at risk of coming into contact with diseases & illnesses that we routinely vaccinate for here in Canada (measles, polio, influenza, etc.) as well as some others listed below. Please be aware that this is not an exhaustive list.
The cost of travel consultation is $75 per adult (+ the cost of vaccinations/medications), which includes up to one child. Additional children can be added for $25 each. This includes the cost of vaccine administration if you receive your vaccine with the staff at Mapleton Health Centre.
This fee must be paid prior to receiving the vaccinations or prescriptions. Fees are payable via cash, cheque, debit, or credit and can be done in person or over the phone.
At this time we do not offer yellow fever vaccinations. For a list of yellow fever vaccination centres in Ontario, please click here.
If it is determined that you require yellow fever vaccination based on your travel destination, you will not be charged for your travel consultation.
To book an appointment with our travel consultation clinic, call into the office and speak with one of our receptionists. Alternatively, you can click the link at the top of the page to email for a travel consultation appointment time.
The travel consultation with Mapleton Health Centre consists of at least two appointments, one virtual and one in-person. Further appointments may be required for booster doses, as needed.
Your first appointment will be completed over the telephone with one of our trained nursing staff. Together you will complete or review the "Pre-Travel Consultation Client Intake Form". You have the option to complete this form online ahead of time, but the nurse will still need to review it with you prior to administering your vaccinations.
Your second appointment will be completed in-person and include your vaccination administration (if you choose to have them administered at the clinic). You may choose to have your vaccines administered elsewhere if you wish.
Please note that the injection fee is included in the travel consultation cost. If you choose to have your vaccines administered elsewhere there may be an extra cost to this.
If your travel vaccination requires booster doses and you choose to have your vaccines administered at our clinic, you have to option of consenting to a reminder phone call/email when you are due for your booster dose.
This cost is included in the initial travel consultation fee. If you received your first dose somewhere else but would like our nurses to administer a subsequent dose, there is an injection fee of $10.
Once the physician orders your vaccines or medication you have the option to pick them up at any pharmacy of your choosing.
Conveniently, there is a pharmacy located directly inside the waiting room at Mapleton Health Centre, the Mapleton Drug Mart.
We recommended using this pharmacy as it is convenient and reduces the risk of something happening to your vaccine during transit (many vaccines need to be kept cold until administered) and they can bill your insurance company directly (if applicable). However, you may choose to pick your vaccine up at any pharmacy.
Travel vaccine consultations and travel vaccines are not covered under OHIP. However, many private insurance companies do cover the cost of travel vaccines, we suggest checking with your insurance company prior to travel.
